Nicolas Richard
Principal Bassoon
Nicolas Richard was appointed Principal Bassoon of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra in 2019. He has performed regularly with Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and has also been a substitute with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Kingston Symphony Orchestra, and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. Beyond his orchestral pursuits, Nicolas has appeared as a soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the University of Ottawa Orchestra. An avid chamber musician, Nicolas has performed with conductor/violinist John Storgårds and members of the NAC Orchestra in their Music for a Sunday Afternoon chamber music series. Mr. Richard is the first prize winner of competitions such the Ottawa Symphony’s Sénécal Mozart Prize, the National Arts Centre Orchestra Bursary Competition, and the University of Ottawa’s Concerto Competition. Nicolas was a fellow at the Music Academy of the West and has also spent summers at the National Academy Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Nicolas is currently pursuing his Master of Music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music where he studies with Benjamin Kamins. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Ottawa where he studied with Christopher Millard. Originally from Fredericton, New Brunswick, additional important teachers include Richard Hoenich, Kristin Day, and Yvonne Kershaw.
