Pierre-Yves Gagnon

Viola

Pierre-Yves Gagnon has long experience as a viola and violin teacher in the Oakville area. Born in Montreal, Pierre-Yves Gagnon is fluent in both English and French. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Viola Performance from the University of McGill, under the direction of Steve Kondaks. He then further pursued his viola study with Ralph Aldrich at the University of Western Ontario where he received a Master’s Degree in Viola Performance and Literature.

Pierre-Yves Gagnon was a member of L’Orchestre des Jeunes du Québec and the National Youth Orchestra. He was also principal violist of the Canadian Chamber Orchestra in Banff. He is presently a core member of the viola section of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra.

As a teacher, he was invited to teach in summer Suzuki institute at the South Carolina Suzuki Institute, l’Institut Suzuki de Montréal as well as the Oakville Performing Arts Camp. He has been teaching for the Oakville Suzuki Association for over 30 years.

He joined the teaching staff of the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2018 initially as a viola teacher. As such, he worked on developing a viola program for the Oscar Peterson School of Music. He is now teaching both viola and violin as well as chamber music for the RCM. He has also been a guest teacher at several string workshops in Southern Ontario and Quebec and has adjudicated string festivals in Ontario, British Columbia and Newfoundland.
