teacher resources

The NSO offers a variety of resources for music educators to use in primary, intermediate, and high schools to supplement and augment their music education curriculum.

Study Guides

Educational study guides for teachers based around selections of repertoire from throughout the concert season. These study guides help to engage students in classical music through score study, listening examples, and research activities. All study guides are designed to include direct Ontario Arts Curriculum links and are available for free.

The Recap

“The Cappies” is an international writing club that trains high school students to develop their writing and critical thinking skills. Niagara high school students have the opportunity to attend NSO concerts for free with their “Cappies” team to write and publish concert reviews. This exciting partnership turns our young concertgoers into the writers and reviewers of tomorrow.

Look for highlights from these reviews on our website and in local newspapers!

Paul van Dongen Award

Paul van Dongen (1927-2015) was a long-time member of the NSO, a conductor, and a gifted music educator. He founded both the NSO Summer Music Camp and the Niagara Youth Orchestra. He inspired and nurtured a love of music in young people for decades, and through these programs Paul’s enduring legacy continues today. The NSO is honoured to celebrate his memory by recognizing teachers in the Niagara Region who continue his work by integrating music in their classrooms and inspiring their students to explore music in all its forms.
